Snyder, who had returned to work Monday after a brief medical leave, read a short statement to the board:

"For the past few weeks there has been much speculation and rumors about my absence on the college campus. As the board knows, which was also reported in some of the media, I've been on medical leave for the past month. During that time I've continued to receive medical treatment for some symptoms I was experiencing, as well as having tests and further investigation of some other associated problems to get to the core of my issues.

"About an hour-and-a-half ago I concluded 12 hours at Lehigh Valley Hospital having additonal medical tests done and just learned today that I am required to have open heart surgery next Wednesday. This has been a difficult time for me. It's been a difficult time for the college. I greatly appreciate the support that the administration and the faculty have provided. I apologize for the burden this has put on them.

"Again, after careful consideration, I am requesting from the board an extension of my medical leave to provide for the operation and full recovery from that and other medical treatment I am under.

"I ask you and thank you for your patience and understanding as I and my family go through this matter. I appreciate all the support you have given me. I look forward to my continued commitment to this college and students."

Chairman Kenneth Mohr thanked Snyder for his statement and said he was not obligated to disclose the information.

The board stood and applauded Snyder as he left the meeting early.
