About this column:
In our weekly feature, we ask readers for their opinion on what stores, restaurants or businesses they would like to see in vacant locations. There must have been a time that the intersection of Kernsville Road and Route 309 in North Whitehall looked good. The foundation for a hotel can still be seen coming out of the ground and a building at the rear of the corner looks as if it might have been nice. Today, however, that building is an eyesore and North Whitehall Township Manager Jeff Bartlett said the property owner has been notified to either fix or tear it down. "That property owner is very close to being drug into court to mandate it," Bartlett said. "In all honesty I don't know why they didn't just tear it down when the …
The King George Inn, a historic landmark and favorite destination for fine dining in South Whitehall, closed in August. For 42 years, Cliff McDermott owned and operated the restaurant at the corner of Hamilton and Cedar Crest boulevards. In August, McDermott closed the restaurant abruptly - leaving a sign on the door that read: We're sorry. The King George Inn is now closed for business. Thank you for your patronage the past 42 years. Since closing, there have been multiple offers on the property, which is listed at $1,399,000, according to Bill Plasha, chairman of the commercial group …
Patch snapped a picture of the former Yorgey Supply Kitchen & Bath Design Center store at the corner of Orchard Road and Route 309, thinking it was a vacancy that retailers and readers would love to see filled because of its visibility on a highly traveled route. Unfortunately, there's no chance that will happen. According to Greg Kotch, partner and vice president at Yorgey Supply, his company was forced to sell the building to the state, under eminent domain, so PennDOT can widen the intersection. Apparently PennDOT has had plans to widen the western side of the intersection since the late…
Magnolia’s Vineyard Restaurant, located at 2204 Village Road where it intersects with Huckleberry Road, is a historic building that has been used as an inn and restaurant since the 1800s. It's also thought to be haunted by a good-natured ghost named Magnolia Evans, whose family once owned the building. Larry Ginsburg, of Prudential Regency Real Estate, currently represents the property, which is owned by a bank. He said it is 8,000 square feet, zoned commercial and is listed for $320,000. There was one interested party that recently looked at the building and wanted to use it as a daycare …
The empty bank building in front of the PA Liquor Store and Sam's Pizza on Rte. 873 is currently available for lease. North Whitehall Township Manager Jeff Bartlett said it is owned by the King family and they also own the strip mall, including Weiss, across Rte. 873. Bartlett said the owners are actively marketing the former bank building but he didn't know if any businesses were interested. The area is zoned for general commercial use. What would you like to see located there?
The former Valero Gas Station on the corner of Spruce Street and Route 309 is boarded up and closed for business. It's located on a busy corridor at an intersection, which makes it easy to access. Tell us in the comments below what business you would like to see here. Is it another gas station?
North Whitehall Township Manager Jeff Bartlett said there have been no inquiries made to the township regarding the closed Krause Certified Pre-Owned Car Dealership across Route 309 from the Schnecksville Fire Company. "That's not to say there is nothing in the works, but no one has come to the township about it," Bartlett said. What kind of business would you like to see here?
The vacant corner of Orefield Road and Rte. 309 is owned by Wawa, according to North Whitehall Township Manager Jeff Bartlett, but exorbitant costs to make necessary traffic improvements have stalled progress. Bartlett estimated that upgrading the intersection would cost a minimum of $750,000. "The area at the intersection is a commercial district now but the area a couple hundred yards north is more suburban residential," Bartlett said. If the proposed sewage treatment plant is built to the east of Rte. 309, as township supervisors recommended a couple weeks ago, then service could extend …
The free-standing retail store once known as DelPrete's Pharmacy and Unique Gifts has been vacant for a few months now and Realtor Dick Adams said he thinks it would be a great location for a restaurant, bank or medical office. Adams, of Dick Adams Realtors, Inc., in Bethlehem, said the property is listed for $899,000, and it includes about 4 acres of undeveloped land behind the building. Located at 3437 Route. 309 in Orefield, DelPrete's was built by owner Keith DelPrete. Currently DelPrete runs his online-based company, Cramp911 Muscle Relaxing Lotion, from the building. What would you like…
